At it Again

After being shortlisted for the YPG Art Awards, I was encouraged to enter another competition. This one involves designing a Cabin bag for Air New Zealand.

The result was incorporated into the wallpaper below:



Just like the last time, I need public support to advance my design in the competition. Here's the link / voting instructions:

Edit: This competition has now closed. Thanks to everyone's support, my design "made it" into the shortlist. Sadly it did not win. Never mind. I do appreciate everyone's votes and have recycled the design into an artwork that will hopefully grace the walls of the new "Middle School Learning Center" at the school where I work.

Home Grown

Its been too long since my last post and I finally have something to share. My latest series of wallpapers all use components from a recent project.

The project in question was an entry for a competition which involved designing a piece of art that would be suitable for the Auckland phone book (you can stop laughing now). This means that the design would need to feature images that Aucklanders can easily identify with.

Happily, I already had reference photos of two Auckland landmarks ready to make into illustrations. The background of my entry is, of course a fractal and it will be interesting to see how it is received by the judges. In the meantime, below are my "off cuts" - faithful readers of this blog may recall that I'm "into" digital recycling.

Already things on the up here in Oz with good news via media as our new government brings in long-awaited reforms and drought breaking rains brings smiles all round.

Tizzy Bling

I celebrate here with two of my Apophysis fractal composite creations, manipulated in Photoshop. Pretty things in the Christmas bauble genre.

They reinforce Dzeni's posit that more use be made of fractals in composits. I agree. I often make them. Go here for many examples.

I think there are many fractalists who feel one must create "pure" art, leaving Photoshop & GIMP etc out of the final image. I can understand that and strive for a final result just using Apophysis as much as I can. But every now and again an image begs to be improved, perhaps with a gradation background or as a composite, as my two baubles illustrate. Art is art, and how it is achieved is the artist's prerogative. I feel no restrictions in that!

However I think I will always first try to create something that works using Apophysis alone. It hones my skills.

Yes, I know what you mean about some people who are unable to connect with fractal art. I have a good friend, she's an art director in the film industry, she is an image researcher for publishing houses and she comes from a family of artists & architects. She says fractal art all looks the same. I must say I was very surprised.

So I said some people say that white people all look the same, or that orientals all look the same, or black people all look the same......and so on....it's a matter of exposure to the subject matter. I also think it has a lot to do with personal taste and brain configuration.

I love the mathematics of fractals myself. The endless diversity I find every time I start creating with Apophysis. Fractal art has brought a new level of happiness into my life.

I am so pleased to be able to share it and enjoy appreciating the works of others.

Especially the work of contributors on this site.

Fractal Dreaming

Thanks for the invitation to contribute here.

I've just rejoined the web for 1st time for about 8 years. Found lots of fractal generators had sprung up in that time and am busily learning Apophysis, Agony, Fractal Explorer, Tierazon, MBF, Chaos Pro, Ultra Fractal, etc etc etc. I'm on a huge steep learning curve....certainly I'm dreaming in million colored fractals!

As I am just starting out into this you'll be aware my work lacks the sophistication of the seasoned digital artist. It can only get better, as they say.
