Unfair Advantage - Update

posted by Dzeni at

The whole "Vote for my Art" situation has not changed that much since yesterday but I learned something quite important today that is relevant.

Turns out that the paper which published the article I was complaining about in my last post acted totally appropriately. In fact, the issue lies with my local newspaper which had access to the same information as the paper from "Out West". Both publications were encouraged to publish news about the competition and the various entries by the competition organisers - only one of them did.

To make matter worse, when I contacted my local rag and asked for their assistance late yesterday, their chief reporter politely informed me that it was too late as Friday's paper has already been "put to bed". You can imagine my frustration when I learned that my local paper had in fact known about the competition for almost a month and, despite being encouraged to report on it, had failed to do so.

The situation is still rather unfair but any blame should be leveled at my local paper which failed to act. At this point I'm wondering why they even have an art reporter.

Of course I still need votes - now more than ever! It will be interesting to see which piece wins as clearly this contest is less about art than exposure - which is a fairly regrettable state of affairs.

Edit: This competition has now closed. The official results will be announced in March to coincide with the publication of the Auckland White Pages. I'll let you all know the result in due course.

Well, I for one, went and voted back when you announced it. And not only because you are a fractallist but because I thought yours looked best. Hope you win anyhow, despite that stuff!

The real problem is that the sponsoring company turned the thing into a freaken POPULARITY CONTEST rather than using some more "art based" method of judging or choosing the look of their product.

Doing it the way they are, some really popular person with a jillion friends and internet connections could have entered a pencil drawing of a toilet that hadn't been cleaned in 20 years and one....knowwhatImean?

Anyhow, like I reckon they might say in Oz, "good on yer, mate - your entry is "woot"! G'luck! :-)

c-ya!

BTW -How would that last bit be said in NZ? We in the States tend to lump you guys in with the Aussies, but I know you are NOT anywhere near there. Guess it's the "Crocodile Dundee effect" where the only things we see here from that area of the world - other than LOTR - are from there. - lol

rykk, thanks for your vote and your comments. To be fair, before it became a popularity contest, they did choose the three best images, so the guy with the pencil sketch would not have made it as a finalist.

Things are looking up a bit. The Western Leader editor got back to me and said he would publish something today (better late than never). The real issue was with my local rag (The North Shore Times Advertiser - NTSA) who knew about the competition and did nothing. The promoters of the competition advised both regional papers that they had finalists living in their communities. Western Leader published, NTSA did not.

When I contacted the NTSA on Tuesday, they told me I was too late - this despite them knowing about the news for almost a month. I'm thinking of becoming an honorary "Westie".

Interestingly the "good on you mate" is used frequently in NZ. I guess we are not as far from Aussie as some would want the rest of the world to believe. We don't use "woot" or G'luck over here though.
